| Act IV 2003 Shortlist Profiles-Defined Mercury
| Defined Mercury is a 4 piece rock band based in Paris, France:
Adrien and Nicolas both sing and play guitar
Jérôme plays bass
And JB beats the jazzy crap out of the drums.
They have been playing together for 3 years now. It all began in the
year 2000 by covering Smashing Pumpkins songs for fun. But at the
same time, they all had their own bands. When they realized Defined
Mecury was the best band they had of the lot, they decided to make
it their main focus, and write originals.
Defined Mercury's original music is influenced by a diverse mix of
musicians. Their influences range from The Smashing Pumpkins,
Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, System of a Down, My Bloody
Valentine, David Bowie and T. Rex to electronica such as Aphex
Twin and The Residents.
The band itself has two sides. They can never decide whether they
prefer recording in their home studio or recording live. Their concerts
are often described as the "loudest and meanest in Paris" (Celesta
Magazine); while their studio sessions are always driven by a
restless will to always push the boundaries of sonic experimentation
in rock music as far as possible.
Defined Mercury approached Act IV as both an opportunity to Metro
and to try to reproduce as accurately as possible, The Smashing
Pumpkins sound in the studio, in order to improve themselves as
producers. However, their cover of "Medellia of the Grey Skies", came
while the band was eating one night at a restaurant. They were
fantasizing about what a collaboration between Billy Corgan and
Trent Reznor might sound like. So they ran home and recorded the
song during the night. That's why there is a too much wine and
cigarettes vocals touch to it.
The band is now in contact with a few French indepedent labels, and
expects to release their first LP at the end of 2003.
Message to the Ghost Children: "Recording and playing the music of
The Smashing Pumpkins has been a good way for us to study a
little deeper the genius of Corgan as songwriter and producer. When
you realize how important 'The Everlasting Gaze' was to SP's
career, you are surprised to note that their isn't a single note of guitar
in the whole chorus. Billy is our main influence because he has
always tried to experiment in the studio and rock like hell on stage.
And that's exactly what we plan to do."

UPDATE: Defined Mercury disbanded by the end of 2003.
But all is not lost, most of the members of Defined Mercury
are now part of a new band, Ask the Dust. Adrien from Defined
Mercury is in another band, Odja. While DM didn't get to
perform at Act IV 2003, which was cancelled, their cover of
"Geek USA" lives on again. It is forever immoratilized in Act IV's
newest tribute compilation, Ghost Children/Friends and Enemies!
